Lilian Douglas did not take many photographs of her home town - Whitehaven - preferring instead to drive off to the nearby Lake District. It's understandable. Whitehaven in her day was an industrial town covered in coal dust (today it's a pretty marina town with some impressive Georgian architecture). This picture is of the harbour gates being opened manually - something the boys seem keen to help with. In the background can be seen a line of coal trucks. Picture: Neg K68
